How does dental
insurance work?
Most dental insurance plans cover the initial exam, x-rays and 6-month basic dental cleanings at no out-of-pocket cost to you. Most insurance plans also cover common dental procedures such as fillings, root canals, crowns, extractions and other services at between 50%-80%. Most orthodontic plans cover 50% or up to your lifetime max, dependent on the plan.
What should I look for when
selecting a dental insurance plan?
If you are enrolling in a dental insurance plan there are a few considerations to keep in mind as you’re reviewing your options. We recommend that you call the insurance company with any specific questions you may have about enrollment or benefits.
Tips for selecting a dental insurance plan:
Tip #1
Consider how you plan to use your insurance. E.g. Do you typically only visit the dentist for regular exam and cleanings, or do you have specific treatment that needs to be done
Tip #2
Plan for any pending dental work, treatment that you need but hasn’t been completed
Tip #3
Prepare for costs for cosmetic procedures, such as implants or veneers
Tip #4
Consider all of the costs, including premiums (monthly cost), deductibles (out-of-pocket cost before insurance pays) and annual limits (some plans have a max limit on how much they will cover, or a maximum number of procedures covered per year)
Tip #5
Review what the policy covers so that you’re prepared for out-of-pocket costs
