8 Treats that are WORSE than Halloween Candy

On October 24, 2017 Written and Reviewed by JDC Content Committee

Nothing is spookier than a toothache, but can that Halloween candy bowl really rot teeth? “A few pieces of candy in moderation won’t do much damage, however other treats can do much more harm if you’re consuming them frequently, and not brushing and flossing well,” says Dr. Leslie Townsend, Jefferson Dental Care – Regional Dental Director.

Want a bewitching smile? Brush and floss regularly, and beware these 8 treats that are just as bad for teeth as a bowl candy:

  1. Candy apples: The hard outer coating of a candy apple can spell doom, causing chips or cracks in teeth.
  2. Fruit punch: The wicked sugars and acidity in punch can weaken tooth enamel, making this beverage one of the worst offenders. Tip: Sip water to help neutralize the acidity.
  3. Wine: Red wine, in particular, is not only highly acidic but can also stain teeth – since acidity puts tooth enamel in a compromised state. Click to learn how to rebalance the pH of the mouth
  4. Dried fruit: Sticky dried fruit can haunt your teeth for hours; since this gummy food not only coats the teeth, but is more difficult to clean out of crevices.
  5. Carmel popcorn: Chewy caramel and flaky popcorn stick to teeth and lodge between and under the gums, causing irritation and putting you at risk of decay.
  6. Chips: Salty and starchy snacks are a favorite snack of cavity-causing bacteria. Limit these foods and brush and floss well when you do indulge.
  7. Pumpkin Spice lattes: The additive carrageenan is linked to inflammation in the body, which can flare up swelling in the gums caused by gum disease. ‘Carve’ this drink out of your routine!
  8. Crackers: Starchy foods are a shriek for teeth, since foods like crackers and bread break down into sugars.
